A Restauration gilt bronze 'evening Prayer' mantel clock by Griebel, Paris
After a design by Jean-Andre Reiche, the eight day brass cased drum movement with a silk suspension and outside countwheel on a bell, the circular white enamel signed dial with Roman numerals, the case with tasselled drapes flanked by terms, with the Duchesse de Berry nursing her son, the future Duc de Bordeaux, with his sister Louise kneeling in prayer beside them, on a plinth base and turned feet, 31cm wide, 13.5cm deep, 41cm high.

Provenance:
The Collection of Sir Jeremy Lever

Designed by Jean-Andre Reiche, one of the most important bronziers of the Empire period, the model for this clock tells the story of the recently widowed Duchesse de Berry and her children. Her husband the Duc de Berry was stabbed and murdered by a Bonapartist after leaving the opera in February 1820. The Duchesse gave birth to her fourth child, Henri nine months later, the Légitimistes thought Henri to be the rightful heir to the French throne.
