Duncan had first observed and painted this curious shepherd's shelter on the Downs above Brighton in 1836. That study is illustrated on page 3 of the Royal Watercolour Society Club's Sixteeth Annual Volume in an article by Christofer Lack. The study bears the artist's studio stamp which confirms that Duncan never parted with it in his lifetime. Duncan must have used it to paint the present picture some forty-three years later.
