Charles Joseph Beauverie (1839-1923)

Charles Joseph Beauverie was born in Lyon in France in 1839, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Beauverie’s talent was such that he travelled to Paris in 1863 to attend the Academy of Fine Art in France’s capital city. Beauverie exhibited at many Salons including the infamous Salons Des Refuses in 1863. As an accomplished artist of all types Beauverie travelled widely in France working as he went, until in 1888 he was seduced by the tranquil beauty of the Forez region in the Loire valley. It was in this location that his finest works were painted, the light was subtle and the colours were striking, Beauverie threw himself into capturing these scenes with deft skill. He made a hundred engravings of the area which were published as a book by Felix Thioller. Beauverie’s work is in museums throughout the world including major collections such as the Victoria and Albert museum in London. This oil on canvas is a masterpiece work of the artist Charles Joseph Beauverie, capturing his beloved region at the height of his considerable powers. The art historian Philippe Tillon has spent many years recording his works and he published the artist’s Catalogue Raisonne in 1992.
