Collecting fossil corals for the display cabinet was a very fashionable pursuit of many 19th century 'gentlemen' who would then take them to local lapidaries for cutting and polishing, or, if especially enthusiastic, practice the lapidary themselves.
The pebbles and rocks would be laboriously hammered in the hope of finding an internal surface that revealed fossilised remains in a pleasingly intricate pattern. Fossil corals most often occur in shallow water limestone and mud deposits and some examples in this collection have original labels detailing the site of their find.
