The Moche culture of the Pervuvian northern coast reached a highpoint in the depiction of the human countenance in its portrait vessels which are characterised by an accurate grasp of reality and superb individualization .
The skilful shaping of the face and especially the eyes achieves a lifelike depiction of the terror of a prisoner , or the pride of a prince , or the fatigue and exhaustion of a worker . The 'mochica gaze' is always evident and is the main factor of the expressive power of these ancient vessels .
