The box is broad rectangular in form with an engine turned base and sides. The base displays a slender cast floral and foliate border and the cover a very crisp wide floral and foliate border, displaying roses. This border encloses an engine turned band and a plain plaque engraved with the contemporary initials I.M. The interior is finely gilded and the inside of the cover is engraved with the following centred inscription: PRESENTED by the Members of the TOWER HAMLETS GENERAL PENSIONS SOCIETY to Mr John Mitchell, as a token of respect for his Valuable Services as Honorary Secretary July 29th 1839. The inscription is surrounded by linear scrolls.
