The rectangular hinged softwood carcass covered in a prepared canvas and lacquered ground, painted with a central quatre-lobed cartouche of opposing phoenix between peony blooms reserved against a painted ‘brocade’ geometric ground, inspired by Chinese silk brocades, mounted with brass spear-headed strap-work, corners and shaped lock plate.

The ‘Kati rimo’ brocaded design found on this chest is influenced by Chinese silks from the Yuan and early Ming Dynasties, which would have been traded along the ‘Silk Road’ across Asia.
