An ebony casket with tortoiseshell veneer and framed in silver metal. The tortoiseshell panels are engraved & gilded with scenes of sword fighters, men playing boules and a harbour scene. The top is engraved with the Grimaldi family crest flanked by two angels, the box was probably a gift to or from a member of the Grimaldi family.
The Grimaldi family have held the position of principality of Monaco since January 8, 1297 when Guelf Fran├žois Grimaldi dressed as a Franciscan monk, seized the fortress protecting the famous rock of Monaco and the port of Hercules.
