Item Description / Dealer Expertise

The Argyle has slightly tapering sides which display a reeded band at the base. The sides rise to an everted rim which is decorated with gadrooning. This example has an elegant plain swan neck spout and harp shaped fruit wood handle. The pull off cover is slightly domed and terminates in a turned fruit wood finial. The front of the main body is also engraved with a contemporary Crest. The Argyle has an inner conical shaped compartment, with a cover, for filling with hot water or a hot iron bar as a heating medium to keep the sauce or gravy warm. The main body and cover are very well marked and this example is in excellent condition.

Argyle\\\'s are generally accepted to have been containers for gravy or sauce, the design incorporating some form of heat preserving element. The credit for inventing these pieces goes to the 3rd Duke of Argyll, as he and his Duchess became tired of their sauces arriving cold at the table at Inverary Castle. The greatest period of their popularity was from 1765-1820

The work of William Burwash is nearly always of the finest quality in terms of design and production. He had workshops at 14 Bartholomew Close when this piece was made.
