This very fine basket stands on a pedestal foot of rectangular form with incuse corners. The base is decorated with reeding and an outer band of arrow head and prick dot engraving. The main body is beautifully shaped and displays a reeded rim and shaped reeded swing handle. The upper section of the main body displays some of the finest engraving we have seen on a basket depicting floral garlands, tassels and foliate scroll work. Each side is also engraved with an incuse corner cartouche containing the contemporary script initials " WS". The interior displays fine gilding and the basket is very well marked in the foot. The workshops of Henry Chawner produced some of the finest engraved pieces at the end of the eighteenth century.
