Silver Sauce Boats
Sauce boats were sometimes referred to as gravy boats or saucieres and were introduced to the dining table along with soup tureens, epergnes and matched dinner services during the late seventeenth century.

Initially single-footed & double-lipped with double side handles, they evolved to being the easier to make and use, three legged, single-lipped and handled examples we more commonly associate with the eighteenth century.

Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the design and decoration varied with the fashions, from simple raised examples to ornately decorated and cast naturalistic pieces.
