The Vinaigrette is oval in form, with deep sides, and displays a plain design. The cover is beautifully engraved with a contemporary elephant Crest, with the Motto "Tenax in Fide - Steadfast in the faith", which is as used by the Smith-Bosanquet family of Broxbournebury, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire. It is unusual to find Vinaigrettes engraved with a Crest or Armorial. The interior displays very fine gilding and a hinged grille pierced with plain roundels, as was the fashion with the early examples. It is rare to find 18th century Vinaigrettes and which were made during this early period by the superior box makers, Phipps and Robinson. Their design is usually plain and surviving examples are very rare, as the fashion was not to fully gain popularity until the early 19th century. This is one of the earliest we have offered over the years, is very well marked and is also in excellent condition.
