The "Bote Swayne" is referred to as blowing his whistle as early as the beginning of the 16th century. Certainly these were worn by the Lords High Admiral of England. Most which survive are from the 19th century. The pipe is known as the "gun", the barrel as the "buoy" and the flat plate between them as the "Keel".

With regard to this specific example, the pipe is decorated with triple reeded bands, the barrel at the end with reeding and an archor, with crown above, and the flat plate, on both sides with prick dot bands, foliate motifs and a vacant cartouche. The flat plate also has a wire work scroll end and a suspensory ring attached. This example is very well marked, is in excellent condition and is in working order.

Length: 4 inches, 10cm.
