A very rare George I Scottish silver caster, Edinburgh 1718, by Patrick Turnbull and assay master Edward Penman. This large caster is of baluster, octagonal form standing on a raised, stepped octagonal foot. The octagonal lid is pierced with a floral design and a raised horizontal band around the middle, surmounted by an octagonal finial. Engraved with an initial 'M' to the side.

Hallmarked underneath for Edinburgh 1718 wth Edward Penman's assay master mark. Maker's mark to the side for Patrick Turnbull. Lid un marked.

Of excellent gauge and weight, well proportioned design and a beautiful lid with pierced design surmounted with a lovely final. The overall patina is very nice. It sits true and apart from a little rubbing to the hallmarks and a small scratch to the side, is in excellent condition.

This beautiful caster is in exceptionally fine condition, a rare example of a fine Scottish silversmith. A superb addition to any collection.

This is a lovely caster of museum quality.
