This beautiful piece is modelled as a Classical Urn and stands on a square pedestal foot decorated with reeding and engraved, in each corner, with a stylised foliate motif. The vase shaped main body has a reeded rim above a band of prick dot roundels, a form of decoration which was peculiar to the workshops of Henry Chawner. The main body displays two reeded loop handles, with bi-furcated mouldings and the front is engraved with a contemporary shield shaped Armorial. The unusual, shaped, pull off cover terminates in a ball finial and is decorated with reeding and prick dot roundels. The cover is also engraved with a shield shaped cartouche containing a contemporary Crest. The vase is very well marked and is in excellent condition. The cover is cut for a ladle and would have been used on the table to serve condiments from. The work of Henry Chawner is exceptional, as is seen with this piece. The Arms and Crest are those of the Dent family of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Height: 6.5 inches, 16.3cm.
