Item Description / Dealer Expertise

The Bottle Coaster was made in York in 1826/1827 by James Barber, George Cattle & William North. The Coaster is circular in form and is pierced with two narrow bands of vertical pails. This example has a reeded girdle around the main body and an everted reeded rim. The coaster is well marked and has its original fruit wood base and is in excellent condition. The design of the piercing is quite different to London Coasters and has a provincial feel to it. Wine Coasters from York are extremely rare and would normally be of the size for a decanter to sit in. Wine Coasters of the smaller size, for a bottle to sit in, are extremely rare from any location. We have only ever seen one over all of the years and that was made in London. To find a York example is especially rare and we think that it may have been a special commission for a rather grand family as the front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Lion rampant Crest, issuing from a Ducal Coronet.
