This rare set of four 16th century English oak panels are carved with female figures with bare breasts and strange headdresses and costumes. Two have crossed legs and two do not. Three depict Ceres with sickles in one hand and sheaves of corn and a basket of fruit whilst the other depicts Prudence holding a mirror and a snake. The figures were probably inspired by reports from Elizabethan explorers of the natives seen in the Americas and elsewhere.
