Clubs and staffs that were made of rhinoceros horn were reserved for chiefs as symbols of status . The Zulu also attached great status to brass and copper , often stripping early colonial telegraph installations of their wire , to use it on prestige objects . As an item of trade , copper and brass wire retained its value and importance amongst the people of the colony of Natal until the early 20 th Century . Zulu men traditionally wove baskets before the intervention of missionaries and thus were familiar with the skills needed to personalise their staffs and clubs with the plaited and woven wirework .
