A Welsh Love-spoon displaying all the charms of a talisman, incorporating symbols of love, good health and long life and carved with the initials A.R.& L.W. and the name A. Biafi.
The spoon's central motive the Sun-wheel, one of the oldest known symbols to mankind is here surrounded with chip-carved rays of the sun originally polychromed red - as was all the carving.
This decoration is now most visible on the tumbler that nestles between a pair of wine rummers, who's purpose signifies the toasting of a union between man and woman:
Apart from the former mentioned the spoons hanging-loop is partially missing, this aside it is in tremendous condition - having a particularly pleasant patina.
Formerly in two separate English collections - details can be supplied on request.
A very similar example is illustrated on page 149 item 'U' of Owen Evan-Thomas' book 'Domestic Utensils of Wood' and it is dated to the 18th century.
