19th Century

Size: 79 cm (across) – 31 ins (across)
See: Finch and Co catalogue no. 6, item no. 91, for two ancient ivory Oliphant’s and catalogue no. 7 item no. 103, for another 19th century example.
Ivory Oliphant’s have been used throughout history in West Africa to announce ceremonies at weddings, funerals, dances and court investitures.
Deriving from the word elephant, the Oliphant is a side blown trumpet, the sound of which is remarkably similar to the actual trumpeting of an elephant. Retaining the shape of the natural tusk they range in size from small highly pitched ones at six inches to enormous bellowing ones of eight feet long.
