Francesco Bergamini was born in Italy on 10 December 1815. He studied art at the Academy in Carrare under Guiseppe Diotti, (1779-1846) a painter of religious and historical scenes as well as portraits. He undoubtedly shaped Bergamini’s direction encouraging him to paint figures in a narrative context. He specialised in depicting Italian rustic life with a whimsical theme and satirical content. His works are well painted, and his beautifully crafted interiors and highly detailed figures contribute to a winning recipe. Although he does not appear to have exhibited in England his works were popular with English travellers of the 19th Century. Bergamini died on 30 November 1883.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
