THIS 3" THICK CARVED OAK PANEL FROM CIRCA 1420 DEPICTS THE LEGEND OF THE VISION OF ST EUSTACE. EUSTACE WAS A ROMAN GENERAL NAMED "PLACIDUS" WHO SERVED THE EMPEROR TRAJAN. WHILE HUNTING A STAG IN TIVOLI NEAR ROME, PLACIDUS SAW A VISION OF A CRUCIFIX LODGED BETWEEN THE STAGS ANTLERS, HE WAS IMMEDIATELY CONVERTED. HE HAD HIMSELF AND ALL HIS FAMILY BAPTIZED AND CHANGED HIS NAME TO EUSTACE, MEANING "WELL STABLE". AN ANGEL ALSO APPEARS ABOVE HIM. NATURAL DEVOTIONAL WEAR TO THE FACES.
FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION.
