signed on the obverse T. Redmond and dated 1761, set on the inner side of a lid of a gilt mounted mother of pearl snuff box
Redmond (c.1745–1785), the miniature painter, was the son of a clergyman at Brecon and was apprenticed to a house painter at Bristol. He moved to London and studied for a short time at the St Martin's Lane Academy. He lived in Soho from 1762 to 1766 but afterwards he settled at Bath, where he continued to practise with success as a miniature painter until his death.
Whilst the sitter remains unknown the portrait is undoubtedly full of life and charm
