signed with initials on the obverse and dated 1753, set in the original gold locket mount, the reverse glazed to reveal backing paper and two labels inscribed with number 18 and X
This miniature is the earliest known miniature by Smart, taken when he was only 12 years of age, showing that at a very young age Smart had an aptitude for painting which developed to such an extant that he became the best miniature painter of his time. Two years after this portrait, he was runner up to Richard Cosway in a drawing competition for under-14s held by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In the same year he began attending the new drawing school of William Shipley in London, along with Cosway and Richard Crosse.
