Finucane was born in Ennis, Co Clare. He killed a man in a dual in Ireland and to avoid arrest joined an Irish Regiment and went to the Channel Islands, a friend of his Father saw him in a sentry box, and bought him out of the army.
The Victoria and Albert Museum have a miniature also dated 1794, when he would have been approximately 18 or 19 years old. He made a name for himself painting miniatures of army and local important figures, starting a drawing school in St. Peters Port. He married in 1802 a Mary Astie, from Plymouth, they had four children.
