A young officer in scarlet coat with black collar, gold frogging and epaulettes
in gilt-metal frame
Although he was clearly an excellent miniaturist, his works are relatively scarce. His sitters varied greatly – from the emerging Scottish middle classes to personalities such as the actor Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Other examples of his work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

This is a rare depiction of an important regiment, which gained fame and glory two years later at Waterloo. He wears the dress coat, as opposed to the more commonly seen undress jacket worn on campaign, and for most non full dress occasions.

We are grateful to Mr. Christopher Bryant for his help in identifying the correct uniform in this portrait
