A pen, pencil and watercolour portrait of a young lady in mourning dress (daytime),inscribed in pencil by the artist 'Drawn by A Burt Newbury 1833'. Albin Robert Burt (1784-1842) is an interesting artist in as much as his subjects are often drawn from the lower orders of society or are depicted in their professional garb. He started his career as an engraver under Robert Thew and Benjamin Smith. He later turned to portraiture exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1830. The subject of this portrait is a good example. The young woman's dress tells the viewer that some months have passed since her husband's death and she is also wearing a long gold chain with his seal fobs. British circa 1830. The image of Mr. Burt's trade label is not taken from this work.
