PROVENANCE: Ex Private English Collection
Some of the early European settlers and visitors to the newly founded Australian colonies collected Aboriginal artefacts, most of which ended up in Europe or Britain. However, the European settlement of Australia began with the founding of Sydney in 1788 and rapidly spread, so that by the 1850’s most of the South-eastern Australian Aboriginal groups had been displaced and dispossessed of their lands, consequently there is little South-eastern Australian Aboriginal material left to be found in situ.
