Ashley Rye studied at St Martin’s College of Art, Goldsmith’s College of Art and the Royal College of Art where he achieved an MA in Illustration. After leaving the Royal College he worked as a painter, muralist and designer and has held a number of one-man shows in London.

The present work was executed whilst Rye was a student at St Martin’s and was one of a group of pen and ink drawings with verse about a fantasy place called Ack-Actown. It was a strange place with pavements with soft areas like plasticine and inhabited by strange anarchic figures and machines.

Signed and dated 19/10/73. Inscribed: If I were to shrink/ Expanding London down/ The result would definitely be/ Ack-actown;/ Yes, if I paused to think/ I'd tell you where it lies/ Turn left around the clock/ And eat a hundred pies
