Adelaide Wicks was primarily a painter of portraits, still life and landscapes, with her portraits often being in miniature form. She was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy over some 25 years, mostly of her portraiture work but also some still life. On occasions she had three works accepted into a single summer exhibition, which was quite unusual for an artist who was not a Member. When she started to exhibit she lived in South East London but around 1909 she moved to Ashley Lodge in Reigate, Surrey.

This work is an oil on panel, which has been re-framed in a more recent gold moulding with inner slip. The remains of an old label on the reverse provides the title of the work and the artist's name and address, which being Reigate means that the work was completed post 1909. Sandwich is one of the cinque ports and this view is instantly recognisable. Overall, including frame, it measures 15(h) by 19(w) inches.
