An Admiralty Islands Dog Tooth Necklace
Consisting of 40 teeth incised with designs in-filled with black pigment
Early 20th Century

Size: 19cm wide – 7½ ins wide (teeth approx: 4cm long – 1¾ ins long)
Provenance: Collected by Albert James Cross of the Royal Australian Navy between December 1914 and 1918 in Lorengau on Manus Island of the Admiralty Islands Group, whilst he was stationed in the Pacific; thence by descent.
Dog’s teeth featured prominently on many Admiralty Island ornaments and were a form of currency that was sometimes used as a bride price. They were often embellished with incised geometric designs, which were crafted by men.
