Portait miniature of a naval officer named Edwin C James. He has dark curling hair and is wearing a blue jacket with white facings, white waistcoat and chemise, black stock and white pleated ruff. The background is a cloudy sky and a classical pillar.

Watercolour on ivory in an oval gold frame the reverse with plaited hair and gold initials. The reverse of the ivory is signed: A Gallaway/pinxit/Edin 6 James's Square/1811

Gallaway worked at 6 James's Square, Edinburgh 1811-1812. He exhibited at the Society of Artists, Edinburgh. Examples of his work are at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Ward Usher Museum, Lincoln. His miniatures typically have a pillar in the background.
