Signed on the obverse and dated 1904, in gold coloured frame the reverse painted with her crown and two interlocking A’s, representing Alexandra and Albert (her husband), in original leather box embossed with raised crown
This miniature, which was painted at Buckingham Palace, was probably commissioned by King Albert to celebrate Alexandra’s 60th birthday. It is not clear why it ended up being auctioned as part of Alyn Williams’s personal collection, in 1910.
Alexandra was highly popular with the British public. After she married the Prince of Wales in 1863, a new park and "People's Palace", a public exhibition and arts centre under construction in north London, were renamed the Alexandra Palace and park to commemorate her.
Alexandra retained a youthful appearance into her senior years, as apparent in this portrait.
The crown, on the reverse of the portrait, represents the new crown named after her which was made in 1901 for future queen consorts
