Leonard Lester was born in Penrith, Cumbria and educated as a Quaker. In 1889 he emigrated to Canada with his family and in the early 1890s moved to the United States, living for a short time in Kansas before settling in Pasadena, California. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, National Academy of Design, Art Students League of New York and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as a short time in Munich and Dresden. Between 1907 and 1916 he taught art at the Raja Yoga School in Cuba. In 1916 he returned to California where is lived for the rest of his life. Initially living in Point Loma, for health reason he moved to the drier climate at Alpine, near San Diego, in about 1929. For many years he painted in the mountains of this area producing accurate although ethereal and atmospheric paintings and drawings of the area. His works are in the collection of the San Diego Museum. |
