A tortoiseshell-lined organic material snuff box pressed with various patterns and an engraved gold coloured metal border. A gold-coloured metal frame set to the lid with a micro carved ivory panel attributed to G. Stephany and J. Dresch; two hearts burning with love united by a Cupid's arrow beneath a flower festooned arbour. Originally immigrants from Augsburg, Stephany and Dresch worked in London and Bath at the end of the 18th century selling the tiny carved ivories they produced to wealthy and fashionable collectors of the day. They exhibited several times at the Royal Academy and were made ‘Sculptors in Miniature on Ivory to their Majesties’ by King George III. English circa 1790.
A scratch to the pressed lid lower left.
