Item Description / Dealer Expertise

A fine quality late 19th century watercolour on paper by C. S. Raleigh, in the American naive tradition, of the barkentine "Skobeleff", out of Deering, Maine, in stained oak frame with gilt slip.

A three masted bark named Skobeleff is recorded in a 1988 publication by the Aland Nautical Club (Georg Kahre & Karl Kahre: Den alandska segelsjofartens historia, ISBN 951-99965-1-6, published by Alands Nautical Club r.f. 1988)

The Aland Islands, now an autonomous Swedish speaking part of Finland, were formerly part of the Russian Empire; General Mikhail Skobeleff was a Russian hero because of his role in the conquest of Central Asia and his heroism during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878.
