A 17th century famille verte porcelain figure depicting the goddess Guan Yin.

The sancai glaze applied to Guan Yin is also referred to as ‘egg and spinach’ and is most commonly associated with the Tang Dynasty and consists of three colours: straw, green and brown. Sancai became a popular method of decoration in China and was introduced to the Silk Road around the 13th century. Following this, the three glazes were used in countries such as Syria, Cypress and Italy.
