Engleheart was a pupil of Joshua Reynolds. He exhibited at the R.A 1773-1822. His works fall into 3 phases, this being an example of his earliest miniatures which were small in size. He was quickly established as a successful miniaturist and was prolific, producing nearly 5000 miniatures during his career.

After the death of Jeremiah Meyer he was appointed a s miniature painter to George III, in 1789. He painted his portrait 25 times, this is believed to be one such portrait.
