Wearing raspberry coat over gold embroidered green waistcoat, his hair en queue
in original gold frame

Liotard first worked in Rome, Naples and Florence. Circa 173 he went to Constantinople, in 1743 to Vienna where he painted the Imperial Court, then to Venice, Darmstadt, Lyons and Geneva. In 1748 he settled in Paris, becoming Court Painter to Louis XV. He visited London on several occasions between 1753- and 1777, and exhibited at the R.A. in 1773-74. He was commissioned to paint the royal family by the Princess of Wales, and in 1761 his work was shown to George III.

The vibrant raspberry coat and dark plain background, coupled with the fine stippling are features found in other known examples by Liotard
