Frederick the brother of the miniaturist Adam Buck lived in Cork where he practised miniature painting for a long time. During the Peninsula war when Cork, was a busy port for embarkation of troops, Frederick was kept busy with numerous of orders from officers that it is said that he kept a supply of partly painted uniforms on ivory and added the heads and regimental details as appropriate. This portrait is in find condition and shows little sign of fading.
