Dora's first name Mahala, means "woman", but she never used it, preferring to call herself 'Dora".Her mother Florence, was an artist and taught painting, her sister was also a miniaturist. She was commissioned to paint 10 miniatures for Queen Mary's doll house, for which she received a lot of praise. She is said to have painted over 2000 miniatures.
