The factory was founded in 1878 by Jean Daum (1825-1885), making plain tableware, he was joined by his sons Antonin & Auguste who espoused the Art Nouveau movement, who sought to rival the works of their neighbour, Emil Galle; their employment of the pate de verre technique of refiring ground glass, which was decorated using hydroflouric acid etching, wheel grinding and enamelling won the company prizes at the 1893 Chicago World Fair and the Universal Exposition of Paris in 1900 won them medals and international recognition. The company exists today, making fine glass, having survived two world wars.
