A rare George I Period oak close stool, the lid above six front and six rear false drawers with the original brass drop handles, the sides fitted with brass carrying handles.

Close stools were used from the 16th century onwards. They usually held a ceramic bowl, but can be found in different variations. This particular example is austere in decoration with a strong grain. The design of this piece based upon an early 18th century chest of drawers. However, the drawer fronts with their drop handles create the illusion of sliding drawers, thus disguising its actual purpose.
