A George I period oak side chair, the splat of vase form having an inlaid flower of lignum vitae and boxwood, the sides with veneers of the same, the shaped seat supported upon generously carved cabriole legs with scrolling ears, scollop shells and terminating in hoof feet.

Scollop shells, referring to Venus, are a very common feature in Irish furniture. While closely related to English furniture, Irish pieces are often bolder in design and incorporate an abundance of design motifs such as floral decoration, foliage, mythology or biblical references (see: Irish Furniture, The Knight of Glin and James Peill).
