The jambs are based on ancient Roman table and sarcophagus supports which were popularised and praised by Charles Thatham (d. 1842) and Thomas Hope (d. 1831), arbiters and connoisseurs of taste and high fashion.
With plain rectangular moulded shelf and geometric inset plain frieze contrasting with the decorated jambs; these are in the form of scrolled, ribbed and fluted consoles with rounded shoulders with lush acanthus leaf decoration capped by stylised Egyptian Lions masks and upheld below by bold vigorously carved Lion's paws with gnarled and curved claws The opening framed with simple rounded mouldings echoing those on the frieze, the whole raised on foot blocks.
