The 18th Century quartered marble top, veneered with Sienna marble. The fluted frieze with ribbon and flower moulding with a central mask flanked by swags of fruit and flowers. The four legs, formed as two ‘C’ scrolls, carved with paterae and acanthus, headed by shells and joined by an elaborate stretcher with a central scallop shell and trailing fruit and flowers. Retaining the original paintwork.
This magnificent Baroque table is outstanding in that it is extremely finely carved with an extraordinary attention to detail. The modelling of the central mask is very lifelike and the swags with ripened fruit interspersed with various flowers are all depicted with immense detail. It is also rare to find such an example that retains its original painted decoration, in this case a stone colour was used, presumably to compliment the architectural stone used in its original setting.
A similar table at Windsor Castle, attributed to Benjamin Goodison has many parallels with this table. The treatment of the C scrolled legs, with shells and scrolling acanthus in the reserves is almost identical as is the use of a fluted frieze with a central mask, bordered by swags and scrolling acanthus.
