After the original 'The Ascension of Christ' altarpiece in Dresden Cathedral, by Anton Raphael Mengs, c. 1750
Anton Raphael Mengs was born in Bohemia. He was trained by his father Ismael Mengs. He first visited Rome in 1741 and spent much of his life there. He became court painter in Dresden in 1745. He was in Madrid from 1761 to 1771, in the service of Charles III of Spain.
