In the shape of a vase, applied and chased with cherubs, bulrushes, herons and other aquatic motifs, further decorated on either side with two cast panels, one of bathing nymphs, the other of an underwater incident in the presence of Neptune, surmounted with a cherub finial to the detachable cover, the foot later inscribed.
For a comparable trophy cup bearing the same maker's mark, also from London, 1877, see Sotheby's, London, 18 June 1970, lot 226A. Like this trophy, it was decorated on either side with panels of figures attributed to an otherwise unknown artist by the name of W. Allard. The style of these panels is similar to that of a small silver plaque, struck with the maker's mark of Frederick Brasted, London, 1879, and signed 'W. Allard,' which was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 3 July 1969, lot 235.
