These side handled bowls were almost certainly used for eating from. This larger than usual example, has baluster sides to the bowl which rise to a straight rim. The cast handle is shaped and naively pierced with scroll work and stylised heart motifs. It is also engraved with the contemporary initials AS, surrounded by stars. The bowl is very well marked on the side and with the sterling mark on the reverse of the handle. The bowl shows its original hammer marks from when it was raised, which is always a sign of a quality maker. Work by John Jackson is scarce and he had workshops in Fleet Street when this piece was made. He finished his apprenticeship in 1681, under Spackman. His mark is shown in Jackson's, " Silver & Gold Marks", page 140. Similar side handled bowls are contained within the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and a painting by Troost (1697-1750), clearly shows a wealthy Lady eating from one of these bowls. The reign of William & Mary only lasted from 1689 to 1694, therefore the amount of silver in existence from this short period is scarce.

Height: 1.85 inches, 4.63cm.
Diameter of the bowl: 5.5 inches, 13.75cm
Weight: 9oz.
