This fine piece is broad rectangular in form with engine turned decorated base and sides. This piece has a beautifully shaded agate panel inset into the cover and a cast protruding scroll thumb piece. The front of the side also displays a rectangular reeded cartouche which is engraved with the following inscription: \"Snuff Box of Alexander Guthrie of the Mount born 1783.\" The interior is beautifully gilded and is very well marked. Alexander Guthrie was a prominent coal master, owning several mines in Ayreshire and the Mount, refers to his home near Kilmarnock. |
